KATIE GRANJA, MS, OTR/L

My Story

I am a licensed and registered occupational therapist in the state of Virginia. I have specialized in pediatrics and school-based therapy since 2004.  I am also certified in Comprehensive Behavioral Intervention for Tics (CBIT), the only non-medicated treatment for motor and vocal tics.  I first learned about CBIT when my son's neurologist recommended that he try it to manage his tics. After more research, I learned that as an Occupational Therapist, I could become certified in CBIT myself.  I find CBIT fascinating and can honestly say I have seen progress in tic management in each and every one of my patients.

MY SERVICES

FREE PHONE CONSULTATION

I provide free phone consults to determine if CBIT would be beneficial for you or your child.

CBIT EVALUATION

I provide an evaluation with diagnostic scales and parent and/or patient interview.

CBIT TRAINING

The ultimate goal is to better manage your tics to increase quality of life and decrease interference throughout your day.  This is achieved through awareness training, habit replacement through use of a competing behavior, and identifying/avoiding/preventing tic triggers. I also want you to be better educated about your tics and social or comormid difficulties you might face.  It is also important to know that you have another resource and support system to help manage your tics.

Q & A

HOW LONG IS THE PROGRAM AND WHAT ARE YOUR RATES?

Protocol for the program is 8-10 sessions with the patient seen for the last couple of sessions biweekly.  However, the program can be flexible to fit each individual’s needs as best determined by the therapist and patient.

I do not participate with insurance, so payment is out-of-pocket.  You may choose to submit invoices to your insurance for possible reimbursement for occupational therapy. Rates are as follows:

As of November 1, 2022 session fees are as follows:

1st session (includes CBIT Evaluation): $175

Subsequent tele-health sessions after initial session: $120

WHAT DOES A TYPICAL TREATMENT SESSION LOOK LIKE?

Treatment sessions are designed to be laid back and enjoyable.  Typically, we begin the session with discussing the current “tic” that will be focused on for that session.  The rest of the session is devoted to bringing out the tics and practicing use of “competing responses.”  Stress management, psychosocial education and environmental modifications will also be addressed through the sessions.

IN ORDER TO BE SUCCESSFUL WITH THE TREATMENT, WHAT IS MOST IMPORTANT?

The most important key to success for CBIT is follow through at home.  It is critical to participate in the “exercises” at home. The exercises given are not meant to take away or add in extra “work” throughout the day.  The exercises are functional. Home follow through and active participation is necessary.
